Guide To San Francisco
Leave behind your busy, matter-of-fact American persona. San Francisco opens its heart to the quirky, artistic side of you, teasing you with the gentle mysteries of summertime fog, balmy breezes and bold European influences.

The distinctive European flavor of San Francisco is accented by a growing number of specialty museums, lively theatre and a happening music scene.

From the serene sailboats at the Embarcadero to the frenzied crowds at Market Street, the City unfolds new secrets and spectacles at every turn.

We'll start our tour of San Francisco by joining the motley throngs South of Market Street. Because you love to laugh, head straight for the Cartoon Art Museum. With a smile on your face and a skip in your step, check out The Pickwick on 85th Street. Built in 1926, the famous hotel was featured in the classic mystery novel: The Maltese Falcon. French Provincial influences are unmistakable in the hotel's tastefully done interiors.

Just a short way off, The Museum of Modern Art looks imposing with its solid architecture and stylish interplay of brick and glass.

Just 2 Blocks from the Museum, the Mosser Hotel offers an eclectic view of SoMa (South of Market) District. Built in 1913 for the Pan American Exposition, the hotel boasts of beautiful period fixtures and furnishings. A few quick steps, and you'll come across another monument that's almost synonymous with San Francisco hospitality: The Monticello Inn on Ellis Street was built in 1906 and features a cozy library reflecting its laid-back European charm.

Take a short detour into legendary Geary Street, before you check out the California Historical Society nearby.

Transformed into a true work of Art from specially commissioned photos by Jean Baptiste Mondino and sculpture surround by Gerard Garouste, The Clift Hotel is critically acclaimed for its artistic treasures. The Art Exhibition in the Redwood Room is a must-see while in San Francisco.

Voted the “Best Small Hotel” in 1995 by Travel and Leisure Magazine, the Savoy Hotel (Geary St) holds court in the very heart of the Theater district. Another gem on Geary St, the Maxwell stands out for its Art deco and theatrical influences.

For the real taste of San Francisco, head for the 1912 landmark Hotel Diva , acclaimed for the “Best Interior Design” by Interiors Magazine. Referred to as “The San Francisco trendsetter, in a city incandescent by motion, integrated by cultures and inspired by lifestyles, the Hotel Diva epitomizes what the San Francisco influence should be.”

If all that walking is making you hungry, give in to the delectable Mediterranean cuisine at Hotel Adagio , also on Geary.

Experience the future of entertainment at the Sony Entertainment Complex Metreon, featuring an IMAX theater and loads of eye-popping spectacle. Feed your endless curiosity with the 3D exhibits showcasing “The Way Things Work” by David Macaulay.

For the digitally inclined, the stunning media exhibits at the Zeum provide hours of interactive fun. Next, admire the eclectic Art exhibits at the nearby Yerba Buena Gardens on 4th Street, just 2 blocks from the Argent Hotel on 3rd Street. Famed for its incredible martini menu, the Jester's lounge at Argent Hotel draws throngs of locals and visitors, as live musicians serenade guests most Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays.

As you make your way to the Embarcadero, catch a glimpse of the mystic Orient at the Asian Museum of Art. The Japanese-style Hotel Nikko isn't far, embodying Japanese spirit in a contemporary Californian setting.

The Embarcadero Esplanade curves gracefully along the waterfront, offering breath-taking views of the Bay Bridge, as the strong wind seems to lift the sailboats into the ethereal afternoon fog.

After a leisurely stroll, take a trolley across Market Street and into the world famous Union Square, surrounded by excellent shopping, entertainment and fine dining venues. Feel sorry for the folks who couldn't partake of these glorious sights and pick some gifts to take home. You can choose from an expansive range of Art treasures at fashionable Post Street. After a day of hectic sightseeing you'll love to soak into an opulent marble bath at Pan Pacific Hotel (Post Street) , while catching up with your favorite program on TV.

Post Street is equally famous for the “Theater on the Square”, one of San Francisco's most exciting stages located in the Kensington Park Hotel . Further down the street, the Radisson Miyako offers a calming retreat with elegant rice paper screens and traditional Japanese warmth.

You're not about to leave without visiting the famed Fine Arts Museums, are you?

At Lincoln Park, check out the European treasures at Palace of the Legion of Honor.

Tired? Cab it to the popular Wharf Area, where The Marriott Fisherman's Wharf already awaits your arrival. Less than half a mile from the Hotel lies the Alcatraz Island (also known as “the rock”), where thousands head to catch a glimpse of the infamous prison which was home to some of the world's most dangerous criminals.

Today Alcatraz is part of the Golden Gate Recreation Area, undergoing a long-running restoration project. Join the effort to preserve the historic allure of San Francisco by buying a piece of rock, sold as souvenirs on the Island. Keep it carefully in your pocket and gaze at it longingly on your way back, reviving your glorious, eclectic memories of this multi-faceted city. Of course, you'll be back!
