Surprisingly sedate for a city of nearly a million people, Jacksonville is often said to have more in common with its neighbor Georgia to the north than the beach-based tourist centers to the south. Spread out over a vast area that ranks second only to Anchorage, Alaska in terms of size, Jacksonville is not your typical metropolis. As if to accentuate its differences from others, it is located at the mouth of the St. John River, which flows from south to north, the only river of any consequence in the United States to do so. Though it doesn't bear much resemblance to other Florida cities in some respects, Jacksonville does have several miles of pristine beaches. Surfers will be pleased to discover the break at Atlantic Beach. Another good choice is the Kathyrn Abbey Hanna Park which, in addition to good beaches, has a host of other activities including fishing and hiking.
The Southbank Riverwalk
One of Jacksonville's most endearing features, the Southbank Riverwalk is a mile and a half boardwalk that runs along the banks of the St. John's River, giving avid joggers and bikers a reason to get up every morning. It also happens to pass by Museum Circle, home to Jacksonville's three principle museums. The Jacksonville Historical Center is particularly interesting for those who wish to find out more about the region's dynamic history.
Lovers of high culture will not be disappointed. The Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra performs regularly at the Times-Union Center. On the other hand, sports fans will want to see the NFL Jacksonville Jaguars play at AllTel Stadium. |
