The heart of America's automobile industry, as well as some decidedly unattractive urban blight, Detroit deserves more credit than outsiders often give it. The time of the notorious 1967 riot is long past, and while certain parts of the city are underdeveloped, a resurgent car industry has taken the edge off of many of Detriot's social problems. As always the city remains the home of some outstanding attractions, and it is an important center of African-American culture.
