Guide To Branson

Known as the "music theatre capital of the world," Branson has evolved from a sleepy Missouri town into a first rate vacation and entertainment destination. With such fame comes consequences though--these first become apparent to the visitor approaching Branson through the stunning beauty of the Ozarks. As one enters town, a notable feature are large, garish signs reminiscent of Las Vegas, advertising competing theatres.

The hills of southern Missouri, the famed Ozarks, seem to exercise an irresistible pull on the human heart, which explains the large number of big city refugees who seek solace here. To better understand the Ozarks, visit Silver Dollar City, a huge theme park that provides the visitor with a glimpse of the past. Also worth a visit is the School of the Ozarks, an institution originally founded for poor but bright students, and which is now home to the excellent Ralph Foster Museum, dedicated to preserving the region's history.

Another peculiar claim to fame of small Branson is the ubiquitous Kewpie Doll. Invented and designed by Branson resident Rose O'Neill in the early 1900s, they became a worldwide sensation. A huge variety of dolls, and their reproduction on just about anything sold, from plates to door knockers, make the Kewpie Doll one of the most famous toys ever. True fans still make the pilgrimage to Branson from all corners of the globe.

While there are certainly some upmarket choices for lodging, you are most likely to experience the character of Branson by seeking out a local bed and breakfast inn, where locals intermingle with out of towners at times. Such places also boast hearty meals with eggs, sausages, and biscuits. Several souvenir stores dot the main drag, and regional handicrafts can be rather interesting, but in such cases it pays to make sure you're buying a quality product.
