Once home to giant stockyards that fueled its economy and left certain neighborhoods with a rather distinctive odor, Kansas City is presently a special destination that truly offers something for everyone. It is the home of great shopping, dining, and sports. KC, as some call it, is also a place with a sense of culture and history--with the museums to prove it.
No one, with the possible exception of unrepentant vegetarians, should miss a chance to chow down on the finest barbecue in the world. Kansas City barbecue has its own, often imitated style, typically pit smoked with a healthy dollop of a sweet tomato-based sauce. With so many options around town, it can be difficult to choose, but Gates & Sons Bar-B-Q is typically ranked at or near the top of the heap.
To understand Kansas City, you should attend one of its professional sports teams' games. Often sold out, the games are filled with impassioned fans. Go to Kauffman Stadium for the MLB Kansas City Royals, and Arrowhead Stadium to see either the NFL Kansas City Chiefs or the MLS Kansas City Wizards.
Although several fine art museums grace the city, a couple of specialty museums make for a more interesting visit. The American Jazz Museum is an interactive tribute to the greats of this genre, and will leave you dancing on your way out. Also of great interest is the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum, which tells the story of how African Americans were forced to play separately until the major leagues were integrated starting in 1959.
