Charlotte earned its stripes early in American history, serving as a major point of opposition to British rule in the period preceding the Revolutionary War. During the war itself, many of its citizens distinguished themselves through their bravery in battle and fierce loyalty to the independence movement. It was gold though, that made Charlotte what it is today. The discovery of this precious metal in the early 1800s led to the foundation of a banking industry that is now the nation's second largest.
