Guide To Providence

Rhode Island, aptly nicknamed "Little Rhody" because it is the smallest state in the United States, and its capital, Providence, have always been a little bit different, with an impact and importance greater than their size would suggest. The history here reaches back to the very beginnings of the United States and then some. Providence was founded in 1636 by the Rev. Roger Williams, primarily for reasons of religious freedom and separation of church and state, concepts that were well ahead of their time.

The pleasant, neighborhood feel of Providence makes it a great place for a walking tour. A good place to start is on the east side, at the exclusive Ivy League Brown University. After observing its stately grounds, swing on over to Benefit Street, where you can see many fine colonial homes dating back hundreds of years, a testament to the city's heritage.

Providence, with its highly educated, wealthy, and creative population, has several unique entertainment options. One of the most interesting and unusual is known as Waterfire. As the name might suggest, on certain Saturdays during the summer, the city sets fire to its river in a bold display of performance art.

Dining and Lodging in Providence

In part because of the acclaimed Johnson & Wales Culinary Institute, Providence is home to many innovative restaurants like the XO Cafe, which creates savory dishes by fusing traditional New England foods with international influences. If you are looking for a place to stay and don't want to break the bank, several chain motels are in the direction of the airport. For a little more money though, you can stay at one of several different historic bed and breakfasts.
