One of the top tourist attractions in Germany is the Schloss Neuschwanstein, a fairy tale castle in southern Bavaria near the town of Füssen. Built by crazy King Ludwig II in the late 1800s, it is said to have inspired the Sleeping Beauty Castle in Disneyland, and you can certainly see some resemblance.
When you approach Schloss Neuschwanstein, you’ll find a small tourist village that includes restaurants, souvenir shops and a second castle called Hohenschwangau. If you want to take a tour inside the castle, you have to buy your tickets down here, choosing the time slot that suits you. To reach the castle itself, further up the hill, you can take a shuttle bus, a horse-drawn carriage or, if you’re feeling energetic, go on foot.
As well as seeing the castle up close, you should definitely head for the Marienbrücke or Marien Bridge. This small bridge spans a river in the forest and has fantastic views over Schloss Neuschwanstein and the Bavarian countryside beyond.
If you go: Many organized tours of Germany visit Schloss Neuschwanstein, but if you’re traveling independently, you should know that the castle is open from 9am - 6pm in summer, and 10am - 4pm in winter. Check the official Neuschwanstein Castle website for more details.
