Legend has it that Windsor Castle, the primary residence of Queen Elizabeth and the largest inhabited castle in the world, also plays host to some monarchs of the past.
William the Conqueror chose the site, perched high above the Thames River, because it was only a day’s march from London and could be guarded from advances coming from the West.
Henry VIII, famous for his six wives, lived at Windsor. Rumor has it that his second wife, Anne Boleyn who was beheaded, stands at the window in the Dean’s Cloister. Henry himself is often seen walking the hallways accompanied by groans. Many claim to see Henry’s daughter, Elizabeth I, roaming the halls clad in black gown and lace shawl.
Charles I wanders through the library and the Canon House, while George III’s face can be seen peering out the window of a room he was detained in during his mental breakdown.
The castle is open year round to the public. For more information, visit the castle website at http://www.royalcollection.org.uk/default.asp?action=article&ID=34#openhours.
