Think Detroit, think automobiles, think the Henry Ford Museum. Of course, there’s a lot more than cars to the Henry Ford, with permanent exhibitions of planes and trains, too. And right now they’ve got a really cool exhibit showing called Rock Stars’ Cars and Guitars, which features, well, cars and guitars that belong - or once belonged - to famous people!
Rock stars, of course, are usually not the kind of people to buy a reliable and fuel-efficient Toyota for their garage. That’s good, because otherwise this exhibition would be kind of boring. The big surprise is that it makes Elton John look less flamboyant than all the rest, with his stately red 1948 Delahaye coupe. Getting quirkier, you can see John Lennon’s custom-painted 1965 Rolls Royce, with the backseat converted into a bed, ready for any more peace protests. My personal favorite is the pink Trabant from U2’s Achtung Baby tour.
There are actually more guitars than cars, so it’s a great way to get your non-car-loving partners and friends into the Henry Ford. Guitars from the likes of Jimi Hendrix, KISS, Rick Nielsen and Chuck Berry are all there to be seen but, sadly, not touched.
To top it all off, the Rock Stars’ Cars and Guitars exhibit comes complete with a few rock concerts. Check the website for dates, artists and ticket information.
