The small state of Vermont is a big place for ski vacations with many resorts and regions to choose from when. Here’s a brief look to help you get started.
- Stowe Mountain Resort: Located on the east flank of Mount Mansfield, Stowe includes the highest mountain in the state at 4, 393 feet. It’s also home to numerous hiking trails if you want to come back in summer.
- Killington Ski Resort: This can be a busy place, attracting up to 17,000 skiers on a peak season day, but Killington is also the largest ski resort in the eastern half of the country. Killington features are multiple slopes for every level of ski expertise.
- Mad River Glen: A special place because it’s not commercialized:, Mad River is a ski cooperative that allows members of the public to buy a shares in it and have a say on how it’s run. No snowboarding is permitted. And Mad River Glen is also famous as one of the last two ski fields in the U.S. to have a single chair lift - the other is in Alaska.
- Sugarbush: Located in Mad River Valley, it is best known as a family resort offering a variety of winter activities, including skiing, ice skating, sleigh rides and snowshoe walking. It’s also an attractive place for beginner skiers of any age.
- Stratton Mountain Resort: You can find this ski resort near Bondville; in contrast to Mad River Glen, Stratton was the first area that allowed snowboarding.
- Jay Peak Resort: Located just four miles short of the Canadian border in the north of Vermont, it’s actually run by a Canadian operator. You can even pay in Canadian dollars in some parts of the resort. It’s most well-known for its off-piste, or backcountry trails. Has about 76 trails in all.
- Okemo Mountain: Near the town of Ludlow, Okemo Mountain is still family owned and run; 97 percent of itsĀ trails are covered by snowmaking, and the quality of the grooming of these ski runs is consistently highly ranked. This makes it a reliably good place to ski during the winter.
- Mount Snow: The first Extreme Games took place here so it’s clear that there are some challenging runs for skiers. Mount Snow is in the Green Mountains in southern Vermont.
- Bromley Mountain: Located in southern Vermont, also in the Green Mountains, Bromley Mountain is known as the sunniest place to ski in the state because its slopes are south-facing.
