On a recent trip to Philadelphia we came across the “Once Upon a Nation” story telling tours scattered throughout old Philadelphia.
Next to or near historic locations you’ll find numbered signpost markers and storyteller. Each storyteller has a few different stories to tell that they will share with you. Most had three or four to choose from but one woman had seven! You sit on a nice half circle bench under a shady tree or awning, something we really appreciated in the hot July sun.
When telling their tale the story tellers are extremely animated, acting, singing, and dancing. They try to involve adults, children or even the unknowing passerby. At one location the story teller had 6 children dancing at Dolly Madison’s ball outside of the old church. You can pick up a map with all the locations, and children receive stars for each post they visit.
At a time when many museums are switching to TV, film or computerized multimedia displays, having a human storyteller is an extremely enjoyable experience. For more information about the program visit Once Upon a Nation.
