Vail village

If you’re a ski enthusiast, you undoubtedly have a favorite place to go, but if you’re looking for a change of venue, consider Vail. The Colorado resort offers some of the best skiing in the United States.

Vail is a little over 100 miles from Denver International Airport, or about a 2-hour drive on I-70. If you aren’t keen about driving in snow, shuttle options are available at the airport. It’s not exactly a big secret that the skiing is fantastic here: More than a million lift tickets are sold every year. The majority of the skiing is for advanced skiers, though 18 percent of the slopes are rated for beginners and 29 percent are rated intermediate. If you’re new to skiing, consider taking lessons at the Vail and Beaver Creek Ski and Snowboard School, which attracts some of the best instructors in the industry.

You might be thinking that since a million tickets are sold here annually that skiing here might be equivalent to skiing on Wall Street during the lunch hour, but it’s the complete opposite. There is a 7-mile stretch of terrain that includes 5,289 acres of free terrain. So whether it’s an average day on the slopes or a busy day, there are likely only to be a couple of other people sharing your acre of ground.

Vail rewards frequent visitors for their loyalty with the Peaks Reward Programs. If you purchase your lift tickets seven days in advance, you are given the lowest price and you earn points that can be redeemed for free lift tickets and ski school. More importantly, as a member you don’t wait in the ticket line and you can head straight to the lift. As we all know, long lines can be an adrenaline killer.
