People who don’t ski often think of Lake Tahoe as a summer travel destination because of the great lakeside camping that is available there. But those who do ski know that Tahoe has slopes that make it a perfect winter destination. People who live in nearby major cities such as Sacramento and San Francisco often make the quick trip to Tahoe every weekend of the winter months to take advantage of the skiing there. Even friends who don’t ski will make the trip with them to enjoy the winter weather and partake of the pleasures in nearby Reno.
Tahoe (as it’s commonly called although the actual name is Lake Tahoe) straddles the border of Nevada and California so many of the visitors here are from one of those two states. However, people come from all over the nation to take advantage of the winter activities that Tahoe offers. In addition to skiing, the slopes here offer opportunities for snowboarding, sledding, snow tubing, snowshoeing, and even snowmobile racing. Tahoe is known for its blizzards and snow tires are required during many days of the season, but there are also a number of absolutely beautiful warm winter days when the slopes are still terrifically snowy but the weather is perfectly enjoyable.

Squaw Valley and Heavenly Mountain Resort are the two major skiing areas that Tahoe is known for. Heavenly Mountain Resort is particularly favored by families because it’s the home of Adventure Peak, a winter sports adventure park that’s great for kids of all ages. Both ski areas are great for adults as well, with snowboarding and skiing available to people of all skill levels. Race your way down the bunny slopes to learn how to do it or get your heart racing on the black diamonds. People who want to visit less populated (and less expensive) resorts will be happy to know that Tahoe has more than half a dozen different choices in the area covering over 17,000 acres of mountainside.

The slopes of Tahoe offer terrific views of the lake below. Tahoe is also in close proximity to the gambling town of Reno. Many Tahoe visitors take the time to head over to Reno to enjoy the casino gaming and entertainment that can be found there. Slopes by day, slots by night … could you ask for much more from your ski trip? There is also plenty of nightlife in Tahoe itself, with music and other entertainment gracing most of the lodges and nearby bars on evenings and weekends.
