Summer fun at the beach with the kids is the perfect activity for the holiday season. But where do all the families go? You don’t want massive waves, or flocks of surfers who’ll land on your kids, or too much nightlife either. Here’s a collection of popular family beaches across the US:
1. Coronado Beach, San Diego, California
Despite its handy location near the city, Coronado Beach still has the feel of an island resort, with that holiday village atmosphere. The weather’s nearly always good, there’s a mile and a half of soft sand and you can swim, boogie board, play beach volleyball or make sandcastles. You might even see the seals there of a morning. The bonus of Coronado Beach is that even in winter it can be a great destination - gray whales migrate right down this coast and you can see them from the beach in winter.
2. Cannon Beach, Portland, Oregon
About eighty miles west of Portland, Cannon Beach is especially popular for family visits. Wide, clean sand is perfect for all kinds of onshore activities, and in June they hold a national sandcastle building competition. Flying kites and exploring tide pools are also great ways to keep the family entertained if its not quite warm enough for swimming. The landscape behind the beach, with its old-growth forests and rocky cliffs, is also worth exploring.
3. Coast Guard Beach, Cape Cod, Massachusetts
There’s history: the Mayflower’s first landing happened here. There’s nature: you can observe the endangered piping plover bird nesting over the summer. And there’s reputation, since the beaches of the Cape Cod region are known across the world. The Coast Guard Beach is one of the major swimming beach and it’s well-known as being family friendly. The surf might sometimes be a bit heavy for the little kids, but there are plenty of ice cream shops to take their attention instead.
4. Duck, North Carolina
For the name alone, every family will love a summer vacation in the town of Duck, North Carolina. It’s also a little quieter than the big-name resorts, with smaller crowds and no overwhelming skyscrapers. It’s part of the Outer Banks of North Carolina and there’s also lots of reasonably-priced holiday accommodation available.
5. Daytona Beach, Florida
But if excitement is what you’re after on your beach holiday, then Florida’s Daytona will be more your style. One big plus is there are 23 miles’ worth of beach to choose from here, so you can explore a different spot each day of your vacation. Being a well-known destination means pretty much every recreational possibility is there: you can hire bikes, boogie boards or a really comfy beach chair. The beaches are wide so there’s plenty of space for the kids to play, plus if the weather has an off day there are plenty of amusement parks, museums and science centers within day-trip reach.
