Advanced skiers will enjoy Jackson Hole

Jackson Hole

The Jackson Hole Valley in the west of Wyoming is a great destination for a ski vacation. Here’s some information on the area’s top ski resorts.

Jackson Hole Mountain Resort

Located near Teton Village, a short distance northwest of the town of Jackson itself, this resort boasts some of the most challenging ski terrain in the world. In fact, only about 10 percent of the runs at this resort are considered suitable for beginners.

On Rendezvous Mountain, the terrain includes chutes, glades and bowls and the longest continuous inbound rise of any ski mountain in the country, with 4.100 vertical feet of skiing. Less experienced skiers can try Apres Mountain, which is still considered an intermediate mountain.

Jackson Hole Mountain Resort also offers dogsledding, snowmobiling, snowshoeing and cross-country skiing.

Snow King

This resort, located at the base of Snow King Mountain, was one of the country’s first ski resorts, having opened in 1939. Snow King mountain is famous for its speed, because of its nearly perfect fall-line. About 60 percent of its runs are for advanced level skiers, especially those who like to go fast! Fifteen percent of the runs here considered suitable for beginners.

Snow King boasts extensive snowmaking, so the conditions are reliable and the ski runs are open for both day and night skiing. There is also an iceskating rink and the King Tubes slope for a heap of family sliding fun.

Grand Targhee Resort

This resort has the most challenging slopes of all, with 85 percent of its slopesrated difficult whiile the remaining 15 percent are rated advanced. Grand Targhee Resort is about 42 miles northwest of Jackson in the Caribou-Targhee National Forest.

Skiing, snowboarding and Nordic skiing are all popular here. The resort also offers a program known as SnowCat Adventures, in which advanced skiers are guided in groups of 12 through 1,000 acres of powder reserve, covering 20,000 vertical feet in a single day of skiing.

Back at the resort, there’s a comfortable spa to soak weary muscles in and plenty of massage facilities, too.
