Plenty of famous world leaders have had a stay in Kennebunkport, Maine, thanks to it being home to President George Bush senior’s summer residence. But just because people like Margaret Thatcher, Mikhail Gorbachev and and Vladimir Putin have visited Kennebunkport, doesn’t mean that you can’t stop by too!

Kennebunkport is well known as one of the most expensive vacation areas in the north-east, and in the fall it’s a common stopping point for tours showcasing the New England fall colors. But it’s also worth a visit at other times of year. You can check out the Franciscan Monastery, the Kennebunk Marine Museum and the Seashore Trolley Museum, or take a ride on an Intown Trolley Co. trolley, which will give you a historic sightseeing tour around Kennebunkport. It even drives you past the former president’s estate if you’re curious.

There are heaps of cute bed and breakfast lodges to stay in, although you probably won’t find many budget rates, so look around carefully. When you’re ready for a meal, there are also a surprising large number of quality restaurants, given the town’s small population. Many restaurants are located near or next to the water, which is my tip for the most pleasurable dining experience in Kennebunkport - unless the President invites you round for dinner.
