For many years, Virginia Beach has earned the reputation for being the “Redneck Riviera”. Needless to say, the marketing department in the Tourism Bureau has had a difficult challenge in trying to defy that stereotype.
To bring some badly needed glitz to the area, development is shifting to the area north of 20th Street where new hotels and restaurants are popping up at a rapid pace. A number of East coast cities are within an easy day’s drive of Virginia Beach, and the backdrop of 20 miles of sand and surf has drawn generations of families over the years. Besides the usual beach activities of swimming, surfing, and fishing, nature lovers flock to the Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge, which is a few miles from the beach. No east coast beach vacation escapes the threat of rain; however the Virginia Aquarium and Marine Science Center is a fun filled and at the same time education diversion to the beach. Speaking of education, this region is the cornerstone of American history. On April 26th, 1607, the first settlers planted their cross at First Landing Cross in Jamestown. Additionally, Colonial Williamsburg is a pleasant excursion from Virginia Beach and a hands-on history lesson for kids. The peak tourist season runs from Memorial Day to Labor Day Weekend, although pleasant weather generally runs from April through October. For more information on Virginia Beach, visit www.vbfun.com
