Hotel Del Coronado

The Hotel Del Coronando, located just across the bay from San Diego, has a long and colorful history. The striking Victorian structure was completed in 1888 and has played host to 15 U.S. presidents and a long list of celebrities. But legend says one guest never left the hotel.

The Del’s Ghost
Kate Morgan checked into room 302 (now 3327) in 1892 to meet her estranged husband. She was found dead on the beach five days later of a gunshot wound. Although her death was ruled a suicide, some question has always existed about the true nature of her demise. To this day, visitors to room 3327 report seeing a young woman in white and other strange, inexplicable occurrences.

Visiting the Del Coronando
Most visitors don’t give a thought to the Del’s resident ghost.  The hotel has been the scene of much happier, historic moments, too. It was here that the Marilyn Monroe movie, Some Like it Hot, was filmed. It is also rumored that the Del was where King Edward VIII of England met the woman for whom he would relinquish his throne. The hotel was declared a National Historical Landmark in 1977.

The resort offers a long stretch of uncrowded white sand beach, multiple restaurants, a spa, and a shopping arcade as well as many quiet places to relax with a good book or a tall glass of iced tea.
