Apple season is in full swing and those apples just taste all the better when you’ve picked them yourself. They say an apple a day keeps the doctor away, so picking your own apples surely guarantees you years of good health.
Many apple orchards are offering extra services to help entice visitors, and especially to make a trip to an orchard a great family day out. Whether it’s a particular sort of apple you’re after, a hankering for caramel apples, or the desire to get out into the fresh air of the countryside for a day, an orchard is a good place to head during the apple picking season. Here’s a summary of some great apple orchards across the country that are open now, ready for you to come to fill your bags and pockets with crispy ripe apples:
Doles Orchard in Limington, Maine has yards full of apples ready for picking, along with raspberries and peaches, too. Along with apple picking, Doles makes the weekends a bit of a celebration and offer goodies like fresh apple pies and caramel apples available for visitors too. They also sell freshly made jams and preserves as well as organic coffee beans which Doles buy direct from Costa Rican farmers.
Honey-Pot Hill Orchards in Stow, Massachusetts have 200 acres of apple orchards, so they shouldn’t run out before you get there. A visit here is a great family day out as they also have a hedge maze, some farm animals you can meet and fresh-pressed cider and cider donuts. They even organize children’s birthday parties at the orchard.
MJ Ranch and Orchard in Julian, California have apple picking from mid September and feature Jonathan, Golden Delicious, Red Delicious and Rome Beauty apples. They grow their fruit without pesticides and unlike some orchards, you don’t have to pay to enter the grounds - you just pay $10 per bag for all the apples you pick.
Riverview Orchards in Clifton Park, New York offer apple sales all year round, and during apple season are open seven days a week for you to pick your own. They make it even more fun by offering hayrides around the orchard on the weekends. They also have an on site bakery cooking up all kinds of pies with the new apple blackberry pie being the likely hit of the season.
Sky Top Orchard in Flat Rock, North Carolina is an orchard up in the hills where you can combine your apple picking with enjoying some scenic views over the mountains. They have an impressive 25 varieties of apples and offer fresh ice cream, hayrides, barnyard animals, an operational cider press and delicious treats like fresh hot caramel apples and fudge apples.
