Long before there were jumbo jets, before there were superhighways, people vacationed by train. Today, this largely forgotten mode of transportation is still a great way to see the American countryside, while letting someone else do the driving. Even better, most train stations are easy to navigate and relaxes compared to the typical airport. In addition, many popular train stations, such as Washington DC’s Union Station, are historic landmarks.
Amtrak - American’s Train Company
America’s passenger rail service is run by Amtrak, a semi-government agency whose board of directors are appointed by the U.S. Senate. Amtrak serves over 500 communities in 46 states and transported over 25 million passengers in 2006.
The most popular Amtrak routes include the trains that run along the East Coast, from New England to Florida via Boston, Philadelphia, and New York. Amtrak also has two major lines that travel west, one via Chicago and one via New Orleans. The trip from New York to California takes approximately five days
Train Travel is Affordable
Traveling on Amtrak is surprisingly affordable. The rail company offers a myriad of discounts. Among them are:
• Veterans – 15% off most fares
• Seniors (62 and older) – 15% off most fares
• Children 2-15 – 50% discount
• Students – 15% with a variety of student cards
• Military – 10% discount (also applies to spouses and dependents)
• AAA – 10% off most fares
In addition, a variety of multi-day passes and vacation packages are also offered. For longer trips, private and semi-private compartments are available, and longer haul trains often include a lounge car and/or a restaurant car.
Traveling America by rail is something everyone should do at least once. If you’ve never tried the train, consider Amtrak for your summer vacation. It’s scenic, historic, and fun!
