Even if you don’t believe in ghosts, a trip to Berry Pomeroy Castle is an historically enriching experience. And if you’re on the lookout for ghosts this Halloween, the castle is the destination of choice; that spooky fog that enshrouds the castle is enough to give anyone ghostly chills!
Said to be the most haunted castle in the British Isles, the castle is now a romantic ruin that gives off an aura of its troubled past. The original building was constructed back in the 13th century and some of the ghosts that reportedly haunt the structure date back to that time of knights of knights and their ladies. Two of those ladies, the White Lady and the Blue Lady, continue to roam the castle halls, legends say. The first, Margaret Pomeroy, was locked in a dungeon by a jealous sister. The Blue Lady, said to be the daughter of a Norman lord, lures visitors into the castle ruins, according to legend.
Since it’s in ruins, you can’t stay overnight at at Berry Pomeroy Castle. Throughout the month of October, the castle is open for visitors daily from 10 am to 4 pm. Admission for adults is £3.60; £1.80 for children ages 5-15; admission is free for children under 5.
