Civil War fortress, federal prison, bird sanctuary, birthplace of the American Indian Red Power movement, those are just some of the reasons visitors flock to Alcatraz Island in San Francisco Bay. But did you also know that the island is haunted?
There’s not much on the small island other than the remains of the prison, but people believe its intense emotional history has made it a place where hundreds of spirits are trapped. Tourists claim to have heard the bird calls of Robert Stroud, known as the Birdman of Alcatraz. Others say they heard the strumming banjo of Al Capone who used music as an escape. Other visitors to the island claim to have heard strange sounds or steeped into eerie cold spots.
Alcatraz Island can be visited almost any day of the year. But if you’re trying to decide when the best time to see Alcatraz is, you might want to set your sights on the Halloween season whenyou’re more likely to see spirits. Even if you don’t see any ghosts, the creepiness of the fog-enshrouded island is sure to set the tone for the holiday.
