Tutbury Castle, located near Birmingham, is best known as the castle where Mary, Queen of Scots was imprisoned in 1569 and again from 1570 to 1585. Mary disliked Tutbury, which was old and draughty even then.
About the Castle
The Norman castle, now in ruins, is open to visitors during the summer. Though the castle closes at the end of September, the grounds remain open on weekends through October, weather permitting. The site also hosts periodic events, such as ghost tours and medieval dinners.
The Ghosts
Quite a few ghosts have been reported at Tutbury. The most colorful of these is Mary, Queen of Scots, who is said to wander the castle grounds in the evening. Other supernatural residents include the Keeper, who appears to visitors in full armor; the White Lady, who appears in a shroud of mist in and around the North Tower; and Ellie, a pale-haired child of 7, who holds visitors’ hands and pulls their fingers in the King’s bedroom.
Do these unhappy souls really wander the castle and its grounds? You be the judge–if you dare. For more information, visit the castle website at www.tutburycastle.com/.
