If you’re looking for a haunted destination then Edinburgh, Scotland should be on the itinerary and Edinburgh Castle should top the list of attractions. The city’s been called the most haunted city in all of Europe and the Castle has earned the reputation of being the place most likely to scare up some spooks.
Nestled between sea and hills, this historical fortress has witnessed more than 900 years of history, and countless horrible deaths. The Jacobite Rebellions and the invasion of Oliver Cromwell contributed greatly to the death toll and many soldier specters have been sighted throughout the years. The most well known are a headless drummer and a piper who roams the castle’s underground tunnels playing his instrument.
But perhaps one of the most unusual ghosts is not and never was human, it was canine. The castle grounds contain a small cemetery for officers’ pet dogs and regimental mascots. Many people claim to have a dog roaming the grounds, possibly searching for the long-buried bones of his owner.
