Tucked into the base of the Wasatch Mountains, the former farming community of Ogden is one of Utah’s largest and oldest cities. It’s also a fabulous place to ski with three downhill ski areas: Snowbasin Resort, Powder Mountain and Wolf Mountain.
Snowbasin was the site of the 2002 Winter Olympics Downhill and Super G events. Ski enthusiasts will love the almost 3,000-foot vertical drop and non-stop skiing. Snowbasin opened in 1940 and is one of the oldest ski resorts in the United States Located in the Wasatch-Cache National Forest, the resort works closely with the U.S. Forest Service to preserve the natural resources that make this area so scenic.Powder Mountain is very popular among the local crowd, as it has limited access to its slopes. If you’re adventurous, Powder offers heli-skiing and snowcat-skiing as well as snowboarding. With more than 500 inches of snow a year, no artificial snow is necessary and all 113 runs boast totally natural precipitation. Powder Mountain Resort opened in 1972 and has been owned by the same family. Founder Dr. Alvin Cobabe is still very active in its operations.
Wolf Mountain, formerly Nordic Mountain, is a smaller resort known for well-priced deals and smaller slopes, which are perfect for beginners. Families are encouraged to experience Wolf Mountain and attractive package deals further boost the appeal. Anticipated opening date for the 2007/2008 season is November 30.
Cross-country skiiers may also want to check out the trails at Snowbasin and Weber Country’s North Fork Park.
