Lake Tahoe

If you’re joining the many thousands of winter sport enthusiasts who head to Lake Tahoe every year for a ski vacation, you might be trying to decide which resort to book. Try these on for size:

Heavenly Mountain Resort: It has a great name, for a start. It’s also the largest ski area in the region. This resort on the California/Nevada border, has a huge snowmaking system that ensures good ski conditions over a long season.

Kirkwood Mountain Resort: South of the lake, Kirkwood has the reputation for getting the most snow in the region. Crowds are usually smaller here and there’s great terrain for cliff drops and cornice skiing.

Sugar Bowl Ski Resort: Found in the Donner Pass of the Sierra Nevada, this is one of the closest ski resorts to San Francisco. It’s still privately owned and is famed as the first US ski resort to install a gondola lift.

Northstar at Tahoe: A resort where there’s plenty to do–winter or summer–Northstar caters to the trendy and luxury markets, with luxury condos and a Ritz-Carlton. But the resort has great tree skiing and fall lines, so skiing is still a priority.
