Airline ticket and rental car prices have already been inching up in advance of Thanksgiving and Christmas travel, but if you’re lucky you can get a last-minute deal.
If you plan your trip far enough ahead of time, you can usually lock in some great rates on holiday travel. However, the time for that has passed. But you might be surprised to know that the rates you’ll lock in now could be higher than what you’d get if you wait another month to make your plans.
It sounds counterintuitive to wait until the last minute to plan something as important as a holiday vacation. However, many special deals are offered in the last few days before the upcoming holidays, so you might actually get a better rate if you procrastinate.
The best thing to do is to come up with a back-up plan in case the good rates don’t pan out. For example, if you want to visit the family for the holidays, perhaps your back-up plan could be carpooling with your siblings if airline tickets aren’t affordable.
