With the New 7 Wonders of the World being announced last week, I think there’s a new round-the-world itinerary just waiting for those would-be travelers who can’t quite pick their destinations from the long, long list of possibilities.
If you haven’t heard about it, the New 7 Wonders project was started by a Swiss guy who wanted to “protect humankind’s heritage” and (I think) also have the chance to travel a lot. On 07.07.07 the results were announced, and after 100 million votes, the top seven monuments were decided.
And if you want to see them, here’s the RTW trip I’d recommend:
- Start in South America by checking out all 105 feet and 700 tons of the Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio de Janeiro.
- Hop across to the other side of the continent and walk the Inca ruins of Machu Picchu in Peru.
- Fly north to Mexico where you can explore the old Mayan pyramids at Chichen Itza. With South America covered, you can head over to Asia.
- And pull on your walking boots for the Great Wall of China. I recommend trying to get a bit off the beaten track: avoid, if you can, the hotspot parts of the wall where all the tourists head to.
- Keep flying west and you’ll hit India. Agra’s your destination here, to get your picture taken in front of the Taj Mahal, but then explore the rest of the buildings on site.
- Enroute to Europe, hit Jordan and the incredible stone carvings of Petra.
- And finally, relax in Rome after touring the Colosseum.
When you get back from that, put your feet up and wait for them to decide the New 7 Wonders of Nature - that’s their next project.
